A New Baby Gift: A Story to Welcome the Little One
New babies get blankets, onesies and rattles. A personalized story is something different: a first story with the baby's name, or a story where the older child becomes a proud big brother or sister. Either way, it's a gift the whole family shares.

Two ways to give a story for a new baby
A welcome story for the baby
A gentle story about the day the baby came home: the family waiting, the dog sniffing the car seat, the first night in the nursery. It's a keepsake for the parents now and something the child will love hearing about when they're older. Parents can read it aloud in those quiet early days, when the baby mostly wants to hear a familiar voice.
A big-sibling story for the older child
This is often the more meaningful gift. When a new baby arrives, the older child can feel invisible: visitors bring gifts for the baby, grown-ups are busy, and everything changes. A story where the older child is the hero, welcomes the baby, feels a little left out, and finds their own special big-kid role tells them they still matter.
Many parents tell big siblings that the baby "brought a gift" for them. A personalized story is a lovely choice for that moment. Our new baby sibling story has a full sample, and our guide on preparing a child for a new baby covers the rest of the transition.
Who can be in the story
In a Big story you can add up to five family members, friends or pets: the new baby, mom, dad, grandparents and the family pet. The older child or the baby can be the hero.
Ideas for the story
- Welcome home. The family, the house and the pets get ready for the baby's arrival.
- The big-sibling job. The older child discovers they're the only one who can make the baby laugh.
- A walk in the park. The whole family's first outing together.
- The lullaby. The older child invents a special song that helps the baby fall asleep.
You can also pick a lesson, such as kindness or patience, or describe your own.
If you're not the parent
If you're a grandparent, friend or relative, a few tips:
- Ask the parents for the names, and a photo or description of the older child.
- Keep the newborn part simple. Babies change fast, so a description like "a tiny baby with dark hair" works well.
- Consider making the story for the big sibling. Parents often appreciate that most.
